Description

The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 is Canada’s sixth national museum. Our mission is to share the ongoing story of immigration to Canada—past to present and coast to coast to coast. The Museum is located in the Pier 21 national historic site at the Halifax seaport where nearly one million immigrants landed in Canada from 1928 to 1971.

We have an opening for the newly developed role of Director of Annual and Planned Giving. This is a full time and permanent role and will be located on site at the Museum in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Reporting to the Vice President, Revenue Generation, you will be a key member of the Revenue Generation Department, responsible for managing the Development team to increase donor engagement, maximize annual fundraising revenues and achieve fund development revenue goals. 

Philanthropy plays a pivotal role in the financial stability of the Museum and in advancing its mission. The Development team must raise approximately $1.5m annually to help fund the Museum’s public and educational programming, exhibitions, and access to its collection. 

An accomplished leader and well-rounded fundraiser with proven experience in annual and planned giving, special events and sponsorship, you will manage a team of two full-time and one part-time staff member and work closely with the Vice-President, Revenue Generation in supporting major gifts to achieve annual fund development revenue goals. 

You will be responsible for championing an integrated model of fundraising to maximize annual fundraising revenues and donor engagement within the core market markets of Halifax, Toronto and Montreal.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Manages the Development Manager, the Database and Annual Giving Officer and Database Development Clerk to ensure special event and annual giving fundraising revenue targets are met
  • Personally responsible for the planned giving program and making it an integral part of the Museum’s overall development portfolio including identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting planned gift prospective donors and stewarding those who have the intention of leaving a legacy through their estate, bequest, annuities, life insurance, etc.
  • Lends support to the Vice-President, Revenue Generation, to help achieve major gifts goals by researching and identifying prospects; developing prospect profiles, briefing notes and meeting materials; preparing proposals, requests, gift agreements and impact reports; and supporting the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts

Content Generation, Marketing & Promotion
  • Consult and work with department leads on opportunities for support to ensure accuracy in proposal submissions and impact reporting 
  • Consult and work with the External Relations team to develop the Museum’s case for support, donor newsletter/brochures, impact videos and other fundraising materials and philanthropic content as needed
  • With support from professional services, consult and work with the External Relations team to develop annual giving fundraising materials and communications and digital content as needed
  • Raise awareness of the importance of fundraising in advancing the Museum’s mission among staff, volunteers and key stakeholders to foster a culture of philanthropy

Administration
  • Manages, implements and evaluates fund development, donor relations and gift administration strategies, guidelines, quarterly reports and budgets that meet the short and long term fundraising goals of the Museum
  • Manages all records of major and planned gifts in Blackbaud NXT
  • Manages the Development team’s RFP’s for professional services including the Museum’s fund accounting software, and annual and planned giving campaigns
  • Ensure key major donors and planned gift prospects are added to the Museum’s master invite contact list
  • Ensure that the Museum is fully accountable for the funds it raises and that expenditures are in accordance with industry regulations, standards and practices

Risk Management
  • Understands and mitigates key elements of the Museum’s risk profile
  • Maintains high level of discretion and ensures the protection of private donor information against unauthorized use and disclosure
  • Reports risk issues to the Vice-President, Revenue Generation


Education, Knowledge & Experience

Skills, Qualifications and Experience – Required
  • A university degree in related field or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education with fundraising experience
  • 8+ years of direct experience in fundraising and a proven track record of success in increasingly senior fundraising roles and the management of staff
  • Experience in planned giving and major gifts moves management 
  • Breadth of understanding in the different stages of donor engagement from one time gifts to planned giving
  • Demonstrated experience and track record in managing successful annual giving programs
  • Demonstrated experience and success in managing, motivating and mentoring volunteers, staff and committees
  • A high level of comfort interacting with and proven experience developing strong working relationships with senior leaders, trustees, colleagues, partners and donors  
  • Proven project management skills, including the ability to plan ahead, set fundraising goals and to establish an internal system for meeting deadlines, budgets, tracking milestones, follow-up, monitoring, and reporting progress
  • Strong budgetary planning and financial management skills 
  • Knowledgeable of current trends in the sector and experience in both new and traditional fundraising practices  
  • Strong understanding of CRA rules and regulations as they pertain to fundraising
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Blackbaud NXT or a similar fund accounting software

Skills, Qualifications and Experience – Desired
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, complex private/public multi-stakeholder environment
  • The ability to communicate in both official languages, oral and written, is an asset
  • CFRE designation or equivalent
  • A connection to immigration and appreciation for the contributions of newcomers to our country’s culture, economy and way of life

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Work is in an office environment
  • Expected to be available to work irregular hours as required, including evenings and weekends
  • Travel to other Provinces will be required

The salary range for this role is: $87,277 to $118,447.

Compensation for this position is commensurate with experience and includes a comprehensive benefit package, including the public service pension plan. Some assistance with relocation costs may also be provided.
